Mondli and Manto hijacked

The Times Multimedia interview of Mondli Makhanya commenting on the heated issue surrounding Manto Tshabalala-Msimang got hijacked: a scary example of copyright infringement but also defamation.

What has happened is that someone screen recorded the interview and added it to YouTube, but also adding some grotesque images/noises before the actual video begins. Not only is this copyright infringement but defamation since the images used before and after the video will be associated with the product, a Times Multimedia product. It’s also racist, and since the credits have been kept at the end, the video is related to the producers of the original production. I have since flagged the video and am busy compiling the information needed to report it as Copyright infringement.

This is a good test to see how YouTube deals with such situations, and an interesting case study as it shows how careful/aware we need to be concerning the use/misuse of social media applications.

UPDATE: I Googled ANCBC (the term/logo used at the beginning of the vid) and surprise, surprise, the “Why South Africa Sucks” appeared, with a post showing the same logo…
